Singapore Imposes $775K Penalty on Meta Over Facebook Scam Surge
Singapore's Ministry of State for Home Affairs has threatened Meta with a S$1 million ($775,698) fine unless it strengthens anti-scam measures on Facebook. The ultimatum follows police data showing impersonation scams nearly tripled in H1 2025, with victims losing S$126.5 million—an 88% increase year-over-year.
Minister Goh Pei Ming revealed at the Global Anti-Scam Summit that Facebook facilitates over one-third of Singapore's e-commerce fraud. The platform has become scammers' primary tool, prompting enforcement under February 2024's Online Criminal Harms Act. "For some victims, this could be their life savings," Goh warned attendees of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance.
